Whitechapel’s The New Road Residence – peaceful colours and pantry-styling

Apparently Craft Week has been a thing since 2015 but this is the first year I’ve gone to things at it. I say things, I have been to one thing and then raced home again to write this blog post. The New Road Residence is a Georgian guesthouse and former linen-drapers house that has been around for – maybe a year? It belongs to Redchurch street fashion boutique Hostem and I have visited it online more than once to drink in its Spitalfields-style rooms and gorgeous murky colour palette. It’s actually in Whitechapel just off Commercial Road, a road that instantly took me back to New York’s Lower East side circa 15 years ago when I spent hours roaming its unlikely urban/suburban streets looking for some hot concept store of the moment, hidden between eclectic corner shops.

This week The New Road Residence is open in honour of Craft Week and it’s worth making the effort to go.

The rooms are dark and the Hostem folk have gone with that vibe, picking them out in the kind of deep colours that make you want to touch. The kitchen has a sort of glamorous pantry style and all the  bathrooms feature nice brass taps and other details that make you think you need to buy them – the linen dressing gowns in mustard and green for instance. There’s Haeckels soap everywhere.

Obviously there are professional photos of it online, but in traditional My Friend’s House spirit I will instead show you my rather more rustic capturings.

Confession, this last photo is not my own for I could not get a true likeness for the colour on that wall for love nor money. It’s sort of gross but also the kind of thing you’d find in some uber-tastemaker’s house. I’m obsessed with it.

Find out more about London Craft Week here. I’m going to a few more things tomorrow I think, so will shout if there’s anything snazzy.

Every time i come to your blog i see something new, interesting, amazing and unique and that is why i bound to come to your blog. Now the ideas you have presented here are truly awesome. You have presented an amazing combination of color and art on the pantry and styled it very beautifully.

Thank-you so much for sharing. If I was in London, I’d be there in a heartbeat. I love the old houses in that area and Spitafields. If the walls could talk!

Indeed, those Spitalfields homes will never stop being something to hanker for. Thanks for commenting Anne.
