The art of sumo

Just when I thought I’d exhausted new things I could obsess about wanting… my desk-mate at work tells me about a vintage sumo wrestling poster she bought on eBay by ‘accident’. Nice innit?

I like how the colours are drawn with such clarity, not unlike the spreads in the Racing Post of the jockey’s colours. I used to watch my dad pinning these spreads to the walls in his betting shop when I was little, for the punters to peruse. Something that is essentially for reference, and is attractive almost as a by-product.

A good googling didn’t quite produce the same thing, however I did find this at AllPosters.com. They look good don’t they? Dandy, but ready to take you down.

And then what about these?

My brother lives in Tokyo, and I think I might have just found him a purpose, a task, a quest. He’ll be thrilled. And talking of eBay accidents, I also found this and felt quite partial…

Ha! Nice. I like cigarette cards, but I don’t thing they ever did sumo ciggy cards.

A missed opportunity. Cigs are still considered the best thing ever in Japan – I’ll ask my brother if he’s ever seen any sumo cigarette cards there x
