Smart art

Any artist using ‘unlikely combinations of sources and genres to highlight the ridiculous in life,’ gets my vote. Michaela Braun, author of those words, creator of Darthvader-lamp and the Difficult Sculpture series, is from Stuttgart, but now lives in Brixton where she works across sculpture, painting, photography and installation. Her work often references everyday household products giving it a ‘when is it art and when is it design’ angle…

Some pieces also tap into South London life – In Madeleines / Magdalenas (bottom right) nail-art meets religion in homage to Brixton culture.

Then there are her striking paintings, including Roman and His Brother Swimming. Just plain lovely.
