My desk: David Saunders

After sharing a handful of facts about David Saunders of David David last month, we wanted to know more. Without further delay, here’s our first Designer’s Desk of 2012…

Where is your desk from?

I inherited it from a dear friend as she was about to embark on a big adventure.

Where is it ?

At home.  It’s my out-of-hours work desk. I mostly do work here that takes a long time, so it means sitting down working, taking a break and going back. If I were a novelist, this would be my writer’s desk.

What’s on your desk just now?

These are panels for some chairs I made with the design duo Glass Hill. The chair has been snapped up by the V&A and will be in their 2012 summer show. The panels are Beech and I worked on them in pencil crayon.

Can you tell me more about that mouse factory and the monkey?

The mouse factory is in fact the house for an electric tooth brush that I bought at the Wills Moody Jumblesale. The mouse – mickey mouse on the stairs – is the handle of the tooth brush. The monkey is a real cute wind up  figure that swings his arms around when wound up, but unfortunately he wound up my niece and she threw him across the room and his arms snapped off. Poor monkey.

Do you like to have pictures/objects around you for inspiration and reference – if so what?

I have a couple of books that are always on my table, but funnily enough I’ve never found a use for them. I want to use them, but haven’t found the right place in my work yet.

Do you have any specific stationery, notebooks, pencils you like to keep handy?

I always have scrap paper on my desk in case something pops into my head, a geometric pattern for example, but quite often I just draw straight onto the desk.  This picture was taken just after I washed the desk. That happens once every couple of weeks.

Have you found a good chair, and where is it from?

I have 17 chairs in my flat yet I live on my own. I don’t know how it quite happened. I think I went through a period of finding chairs on the street a few years ago; in fact i’ve just got rid of a few. I don’t have a favorite chair though, I try not to get attached to things!

Do you have a view from your desk?

Yes the house across the street.  In the whole seven years I’ve lived here, my neighbours have never opened their blinds so I don’t know who they are, what they look like or what they get up to. I have imagined a few times. I think they are mad scientists, hot air balloon enthusiasts and zookeepers.

Do you have a favourite mug?

Nope I used to have hundreds of mugs, and then I had a team of people working in my flat. Each night I would spend half an hour washing up 50 mugs. One day I made everyone choose a mug and then smashed all the rest. I pretended it was a Greek tea party wedding!

Do you keep your workspace tidy?

Are you kidding?

What are you working on at the moment and what’s coming up?

Record sleeves, t-shirts for other people, some commissioned leathers for pop stars and movie starlets, the David David shop in Seven Dials, Covent Garden, concessions at the Phillips de Pury store at Claridges and the Lollipop Shoppe in Shoreditch, a set of cushions for a high-end interiors company, perhaps a watch collaboration and the new collection for David David to name but a few.  It’s busy in my head right now.

Thanks David…

The David David pop up shop at  the Lollipop Shoppe has been extended into late Jan-2012.

Once upon a time myfriend was embarrassed by her mother making her wait with an abandoned chair in a skip while she went to get the car to take it home. It’s a lovely chair. Myfriends’ mother might leave it to her one day.

Oh wow – nothing better than a street find. Trying to picture what the coolest table imaginable might be like in my head…
