Hobbit houses

I had a day off today, and finally got around to doing a bit of local snooping that’s been on my to-do list for ages. My bus passes this side street off Lewisham Way every day, and I’ve always been curious about this little terrace of what look like backwards houses.

A bit of internet searching found this discussion, with the last word going to a current resident of the ‘Troll Houses’.

“I’m glad other people appreciate the Troll houses as we call them. I live in one of them and was trying to find more info. All i know is: built mid 30s, each unit has a ground floor 2 bed and a first floor 2 bed flat. they are pretty badly built, rough brick, rendered / pebble-dashed, internal layout is really nice with good sized rooms.”

On my way back, past some much larger, posher houses on Lewisham Way itself, I felt I just had to take a snap of this fella.

Pebbledash and white window aside, I think they’re fantastic, do you like them?

Yes I love them. I really like the funny levels, with the doors in the middle and the long windows. ALways fun to see houses that don’t look like any others you’ve seen

Huge windows – do you think they could have been designed for artists, like those houses on the road out West from London?

Hi Di, I love those studios and slow down as I drive past every time. I think the very long windows on these are designed to bring light into the top and ground floor entrance halls at once, maybe. I just wish I knew a bit more about them

My mother grew up in number 80. My grandparents lived there for at at least 50 years.
