Great art, shame about the room

Ever been to someone’s house and been struck by an incongruous piece of art? You know, where the Draylon sofa and figurine collection just doesn’t chime with the great work of art reproduced on the wall? Well then Great Art in Ugly Rooms is the website for you.

I’ll point out right now that these images are – perhaps sadly – created in Photoshop. I didn’t realise at first, but a visit to the site makes it quite clear. I think it was the Michelangelo statue in the bathroom from The Shining that tipped me off… Anyway, the website is an inventive take on certain questions about how one displays art, and what is considered good and bad taste, ugly and beautiful. I have to say I rather like some of the montage ‘ugly’ rooms. I wish more launderettes had a Cindy Sherman for you to ponder during the spin cycle. And did Mark Rothko ever look better than in sunlight filtered through a pink Bri-nylon curtain?

Ah! Bri-nylon. Will it make a comeback do you think?
