Esther Mahlangu

I read about this at Christmas, and have been meaning to bring it to you ever since. The story comes from Apartamento magazine. It’s about the graphic art of South African woman Esther Mahlangu. Mahlangu was born in the Kwamhlanga region of Mpumalanga in South Africa, and paints the traditional designs of her Ndebele community. The tradition is that the women of the village paint houses inside and out to celebrate a rite of passage ceremony.

Mahlangu was ‘discovered’ by a group of French art curators, and has since had her work displayed around the globe. You can read more about her, and see more examples of her wonderful, very 2013, graphic art here. And think on – these exact lines are drawn and painted freehand.
