design democracy

We’re nominated in MyDeco’s Design Democracy awards! Please, spare us the indignity of coming last, and vote for us.

As part of the competition MyDeco has asked us to say what design democracy means to us. My Friend’s House is happy to hold forth. Ahem…

We think that beautiful and inspiring places to live are good for you, and that you can find delight in all kinds of things – monkey wallpaper, books in a pile, Mum’s cast-off crockery, a shelf of mostly white things, eggcups.

Both of us aspire to having a lovely home but don’t mind admitting that at times we can be led wayward by a nutty passing trend or a flight of fancy that ends up not being the design love of our life.

We also really believe that good design doesn’t have to be about buying things. It’s loving what you have and being true to your own style. Being brave and making mistakes – your house doesn’t have to be perfect. But it’s fun to try.

What are we trying for? You know, that totally covetable eclectic, thrown together, completely personal-to-the-indivudual look that also seems to appeal to every house guest. AKA something like the last cool house we saw and fell in love with.
