Boiled leather furniture

Did you see that the New Designer of the year award at this year’s New Designers, went to Tortie Hoare (that name!) for furniture she created using boiled leather?

Boiled leather. That does not have a good ring about it.

However, on further investigation, it turns out UK designer Simon Hasan has been working with it for a long time to create furniture and vessels. According to him, the technique of boiling leather dates back to medieval times – it’s called Cuir Bouilli – and means it can be stretched and then used to form more rigid shapes. Look at his lovely vessels.

Wow. Good post. I never knew there was such thing made from “boiled” leather. It’s quite unique and creative. Not sure if its comfortable to sit on?
