Black walls: Trend or travesty?

I saw this jeweller’s home in the Independent last friday and found myself liking her glossy black walls, if not all her furniture. One thing though, did the photographer have to make her look so ghoulish? No offence owner, you’re obviously a very attractive lady.

Black I’ve seen before, but not necessarily in high gloss form, which the owner chose to help bounce light around. I like the way the spooky skulls and taxidermy looks against it. I also like the way they’ve been used to display jewellery…

Thus, I say trend. But not necessarily one I’ll be working round here.

TREND. However, use with caution, I have used this on a job before on lovely smooth freshly plastered walls, but, the black is not as forgiving as white and shows up every lump and bump as if under a magnifying glass. The outcome? One huffy client, a repaint in matt grey and an even huffier designer.

Yes, probably a trend, I liked this room and was surprised how light it looked despite being black. Not sure it’s a look for everyone, but works for those attracted to the dark side… indeed, its a brilliant canvas for the owner’s work and ornaments.

I have to say that it took me a while to decide wheteter or not to paint the living room wall in matt black, but after I made my mind up there is no tway back. It is gorgeous and contracts with the big white sofa, and rest of light wood furniture and antiques. I feel it is cosy here, although i love greys and light tones wanted to try to live with black for a while…

we salute you as being at the forefront of a trend. I think it looks wonderful. My Friend and I are just too chicken, however.
