Bingo!

Did you see the BBC 4 programme about the Bingo last night? I only watched it to give myself a break from reruns of You’ve Been Framed, but once it started I was totally gripped. It was amazing! For a start you got vintage news footage of the Bingo-mad ladies of Margate, and a glimpse of these two beehive beauties within the first 3 seconds.

For goodness sake don’t shout ‘House’ at the wrong time cos these two will rip up your Bingo cards and stab you with their big markers. The programme traced Bingo from a seaside or fairground game to it becoming the savior of the Mecca leisure chain where tens of thousands played every day. Part of the success of Bingo was both the community feel in the halls and the fact it was somewhere women could go without their husbands. It covered loads of fascinating social history (Bingo and the Catholic Church anyone?), plus interesting asides about the company who printed all the tickets and why callers no longer really say “legs eleven.”

It’s available to watch on i-player until 19th Feb, so I urge you to send your fella to the pub, light a fag, back-comb your hair and watch it, here.

I’ve never played Bingo but I have aspired to a beehive hairdo. Maybe more the one on the right. My friend Susan had one very like the one on the left thanks to massive backcombing and industrial quantities of hair lacquer. (Blow “feels natural and soft”). It felt like wire wool and could resist a force nine gale. I shall watch the programme on i-player.
