Weirldy timeless interiors of Blade Runner

I’m 37 years old and I only just watched Blade Runner for the first time. How I’ve managed it I don’t know – there have been boyfriends through the years droning on about it certainly and to all them, yes, yes it is good. Anyway under the haze of two large Negroni’s on saturday night, I finally watched this movie and was struck mostly by the unusual aesthetic of the locations. This must have everything to do with the fact that the film is set in 2019 – just four years away from now – but filmed back in 1982.

Whatever happened to Sean Young?

As well as the jarring effect of the film’s location of LA always being in darkness, always lashing down with rain, it’s pretty difficult to pin down the rooms in the key sets to a particular style. Especially in Deckard’s (Harrison Ford) apartment, which I just found out was filmed in Frank Lloyd Wright’s Ennis-Brown House.

Here the decorative panelling in the rooms was created from casts of the building’s real exterior and to me they help create the hard-to-place interiors style that makes the place feel authentically futuristic. Authentically different anyway.

If you’re anything like in the camp of the aforementioned boyfriends, you might want to pay a visit to Propsummit where a group of nerds fans have congregated to work out the origins of all the props in Deckard’s  apartment – lights and so on.

A Get the look: ‘Pretty dingy future style’ to bring cheer to your monday – you’re welcome.

I’ve never seen it either. And I’m 36 (ahem). I never really fancied it (which is bloke heresy, of course) but looking at it from the angle you’ve taken here I think it’s high time I did.

I recommend an appropriate brain modifier for watching it – my choice of poison was just the right mood setter for all the dark and rain.
