Trend: Punched pictures

Did you see Evander Holyfield on Celeb Big Brother, claiming to have punched a horse? Liz Jones wasn’t happy, and his defence that it was his horse didn’t sway her one bit. My point is that we all want to punch something every so often, but let’s keep it to inanimate objects shall we? A case in point is this picture I just bought:

Monet flowers in red vase

It’s a funny thing, a textured print of a Monet painting which is designed to feel like an actual canvas, complete with bumps and brush strokes. I adore the image, but, being a total snob, would never normally give house room a reproduction of a famous painting. I got it for pennies as it has a hole punched in it, torn right through the canvas. Somehow this act of artistic aggression punctures the pretention of my mock Monet, and makes me love it even more. I’m now looking for other lovely canvases to punch, for that authentic brawling-boho vibe. Trend!

Now desperate for your own Red Vase canvas to punch? Buy one here.

I have 2 old amateur paintings that are torn, I know – painfully shabby chic isn’t it. I do like a bit of Arte Povera with my classics, radical and traditional at the same time!

Well I think it’s the heading those guys who punch and slash their canvasses come under, I think they’re considered the significant link moving from abstract art to conceptual in the late fifties into the sixties.
