Trend or travesty: Being inspired by mega stars?

Please find below a blog post that reveals the mind set of a 16 year old fan girl. For I seem to have developed a fixation with Kanye West. It started innocently enough with a rekindled obsession with Chris Rock and the discovery that they were friends. Then Showstudio announced that Lou Stoppard was to be interviewing Kanye live and I watched that and the rest is a series of nights spent googling ‘Kanye West…’ plus various strange questions. I’m bowled over by his absolutely unshakable confidence. It’s transfixing, I wish I had it myself. And I know that’s the thing that drives most people up the wall and makes for those annoying and predictable headlines about him in magazines. Yes that’s exactly what a 16 year old fan would say, get over it.

Screen Shot 2015-10-13 at 14.46.25 I’m learning about his music now in depth – never late to the playground – and know all about his fashion lines and collaborations, his take on politics (racism) and his belief that reality tv is the new Hip Hop and the newest form of art. He makes a compelling if meandering case for that in the interview along with some insights about his relationship with colour, which I found interesting given that Ros and I write for a colour magazine. If I can snare an interview with him about that I’ll let you know. Don’t think I’ve not thought about it.

And I do appreciate that you don’t need me to tell you about two of the world’s biggest names. But this very recent interview with her comes from Miranda July who suffers her own brilliantly embarrassing version of teenage-style fannish behaviour. It begins in the taxi on the way to meet Rih Rih when she can’t stop herself from telling the driver where she’s going, which you can identify with wholeheartedly.

Read it here and watch the helpful film Miranda’s made, How to Be Yourself While Interviewing Rihanna. Spoiler alert: She doesn’t really know how to advise on that.
