On the cusp of a kitchen

When I was a child I remember a book from the library about a man living alone who hated to wash up. He bought a flat-bed truck, put all his dirty dishes on it, and drove it around in the rain. This will be me if I don’t make some kitchen decisions and fast. Below is my Margate kitchen. Believe me, it actually looks better than when the old units were in there. Don’t be deceived – that sink doesn’t work, so even a lazy bones like me will need to get on and just get a flipping kitchen installed already.

Long-time followers of this blog will know that I set up a kitchen Pinterest board in preparation for this moment in roughly 1846. Now it’s time to make those ideas a reality – on a shoestring, naturally. Below are some images I’ve been fondling all this time. The main theme is black units…

Black kitchen units

British Standard kitchens

Belfast sinks, exposed copper pipes with brass taps and white subway tiles (NOT bevelled – do you want to be cleaning grease off those angled edges for the rest of your life?) also feature heavily. Above is a kitchen by the wonderful British Standard, but I’m aiming to achieve a similar look with Swedish Standard, AKA Ikea. Example of the Laxarby units below:

One big thing is I don’t want standard wall units. They take up loads of room and suck out loads of light. I only really need to store a tin of coffee, some wine and some Super Noodles so I was planning on finding a skinny little wooden Victorian cupboard of some sort instead. Imagine my delight then when I found this in Margate Retro… it’s really a museum cabinet, meant to be laid flat. But what luck – it’s exactly the width of a wine bottle so it’s going on the wall to display my pretty cups and contempt for bulk-buying at the super market.

All that remains is to bring the subway tiles Jill gave me 8 years ago up from the cellar and get the doors and that ordered from Ikea. Oh, and I need to source a vintage science worktop and a sink… I should be able to eat a normal meal again by mid-Feb. Can’t wait to share the results with you x

The more thought and care you take with your kitchen the more you will love the finished product , but i’m sure you know that . The sash window in the picture will be a fabulous feature as well .Good luck and fun with ‘ sourcing ‘

These black units are really great! Are those flat pack units? I have a thing ready to assemble flatpacks (beside a few furniture assembler teams). Out of these my favorite would be #2. I prefer having the white side of the kitchen above the black. Ps: you pinterest kitchen board is awesome!
