Inside a showgirl’s bathroom cabinet
I only went out to buy some milk… but with this amazing salvage yard at the end of the road, it’s just too tempting to have a look. I ended up wheeling this little wall cabinet back home on a fabulous drinks trolley*.
As I may have mentioned, a bit of shabby pink paint gets me every time. But when I went to buy it, the salvage lady told me a story that was irresistible. “That’s the last thing out of the most amazing house I’ve ever cleared,” she said. I leaned in closer. “It was this old lady in Clapham, and she’d been a showgirl. Her house was untouched.” The salvage lady painted me a picture of a time capsule, with a lit and canopied bar area, beaded curtains and mirrors everywhere. And here it was, the chance for me to own this showgirl’s bathroom cabinet. For just £5. Done.
I haven’t cleaned it yet, but look at that olive and pink interior! What does a showgirl keep in her bathroom cabinet? I’m thinking cherry red lipstick, obscure French perfume, false eyelashes and a bottle of gin. I will be honouring the Clapham showgirl’s memory thusly.
*The drinks trolley is a gift for someone so I’m not showing it. But honestly, you’d flip you lid. It’s gorgeous.
