Before and after: Going dark

This is a corner of the spare room in my house as it appeared in the book Design Bloggers at Home.

Stiffkey blue study | My Friend's House

Ta da, it’s been painted. I thought it would be HUL-arious to style it up exactly as it was in the book. Then I realised the original plant is dead, the head is now in a charity shop and well, I lost interest at pencils. Whatever. The colour change, I totally love it. It’s Farrow & Ball’s Siffkey Blue and I almost wish I’d gone even darker with Hague Blue.

I now realise the house is full of blue, which is a colour I genuinely didn’t think I liked that much. How did that happen? Anyone else got a colour taking over in their home by accident?

Its gorgeous. I’ve been thinking of going for that colour in the bedroom. What do you think? Would it work in your opinion? Alternative is grey but that’s a colour that’s taking over in our house!

Yes I think it would – this is in a bedroom, it just doubles as a study. I was a bit shocked at first and it didn’t look amazing until I got all the stuff back in and saw belongings on a backdrop of dark blue. Go for it!

Green! I officially ‘don’t like’ green but it’s somehow bloody everywhere in my living room! Love your bold move to dark blue though – has given me some sly anti-green ideas…

Green I like! But it’s nice to hear this is happening to other people.

Weird question, but can I ask what ceiling colour you’ve chosen? I’m thinking of doing be bedroom in a similar colour (either F&B Stiffkey or Tempest by Fired Earth) but can’t decide whether to go the whole hog and do skirting, picture rail and ceiling in the same colour, or whether to do them a shade of white. Not sure if white looks a bit stark against the very dark blues.

Hi Kath, not a weird question at all, but this is an attic room so we painted the ceiling the same colour – i.e. it’s all around. In ‘normal’ rooms I do think it’s nicer when the skirting and dado are painted the same colour too, but it’s a personal taste thing. Ceilings I think you can get away with a different colour or white. In fact,it does look nice to use a paler shade of the same colour – e.g. blue in this case – for skirtings and dados. I’d probably chicken out and do the ceiling white though. Hope that helps.
